The gameplay requires you to control Fireboy and Watergirl 2: The Light Temple to process a series of platforming puzzles. Watergirl is controlled using the W, A, S, and D keys, while Fireboy is moved with the arrow keys. Your goal in Fireboy and Watergirl 2: The Light Temple is to guide both characters to their respective exit doors and avoid obstacles with hazards. Your two characters must work together to push buttons, pull levers, and use mirrors to direct light beams that activate doors and platforms. Since Watergirl cannot touch fire and Fireboy cannot touch water, you should plan their movements to support each other through levels. Additionally, your characters must collect diamonds matching their elemental nature. Blue diamonds are for Watergirl while red ones are for Fireboy.
Fireboy and Watergirl each own their special powers and weaknesses. Fireboy is resistant to fire and can walk through lava unharmed, but he is highly vulnerable to water. He will dissolve and restart the level if stepping into it will cause. On the contrary, Watergirl is immune to water and can move freely through pools and waterfalls.
